Riosol Hotel

Island of Stars

International Award Winner of the "Elevator World Project 2020"

Our project for the Riosol Hotel, Island of Stars, has received the Elevator World 2020 Award. Project of the Year.

These are the most important international awards for architecture in the transportation and mobility industry.

The prestige of other winners sheds some light on the importance of the award: New York´s newest icon, "The Vessel", by Thomas Heatherwick; the rehabilitation of the "Empire State Building", also in New York; and the Singapore Airport, by Safdie Architects (Boston).

Our involvement in this project has been complete. In addition to architecture, our scope also included the design for Thyssenkrupp to manufacture the cabins. And, from the synergy of both environments, construction and industry, a comprehensive work has emerged, rich in design as well as in detail.

We took on the challenge of creating a infrastructure with a soul. Strategy and poetics in equal parts. The result is a project that is already part of the lives of its peoples, both locals and visitors, who have already made it their own.

The new complex overlaps the pre-existing building, a hotel designed in the 70s with obsolete services and facilities.

The intervention consists in spreading an environmental layer with universal accesibility, giving a future to the previous construction with the implementation of green systems and accessible transportation.

The old cover, full of slopes and with obsolete uses and services, will host the set of measures aimed at reducing the hotel's energy consumption, the land used in new plantations and the pools, in which the water bodies exchange heat using the renewable heating system.

The air chamber generated in this space provides ventilation and cooling for spaces, reducing the need for energy input.

And the ultimate result is a magic carpet, in blue, which provides a dimensionless experience, mixing the sky and the ground, using sheets of the water and ocean.

It flies over the cornice of Puerto Rico and overlaps the existing hotel unabashedly, with architectural and business value.

Government bodies at the state and local level have made it possible through urban planning for these actions to be both feasible and effective.

The Modernisation, Improvement and Competitiveness Increase Plan for the Mogán Coast, which develops the Law on Tourist Renovation and Modernisation of the Canary Islands, were the necessary tools behind the renaissance of a hotel that never lost its charm but can now be shown to the world as an example.
